Since the early 2000s, Enterprise Network Architecture relied heavily on a perimeter security approach, with Next-Generation Firewalls (NGFW) at the heart of this model. Most organisations adopted design principles such as security zones, WAN Edge for remote offices and branches, and a Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) where security services are centralised for network traffic – commonly North/ South traffic – to be inspected, applying security controls and policies.
